Cities around the world face many challenges to their cleanliness and environmental sustainability, including rising greenhouse gas emissions, unsanitary public spaces, foul odors, growing energy demand, low recycling rates, and limited space.

Taka ni Pato Project (trash is Cash)

Taka ni Pato program's overall goal is to build capacity for effective, environmentally friendly and profitable community-managed solid waste management systems in Nairobi's informal settlements To demonstrate the important links that can be made between environmental management, income generation and community development

FOAD joined the program in 2007 and it continues to be a key component of our work to date. The program has achieved the following:

  • To sensitization community groups on clean environment and the potential benefits of environmental protection.
  • To promotion of Solid Waste Management in the Community.
  • Introduction and up-grading of waste recycling and innovative technologies to improve safety, health and productivity.
  • Marketing of products and establishment of links with potential donors, stakeholders and clients.
